What is Botox?
“Botox” (the neuromodulator Botulinum Neurotoxin Type A or “BoNt-A”) sold
in North America as Botox, Dysport is a purified protein for restorative and cosmetic procedures. The protein is administered to specific points in the face to temporarily relax your muscles. At SFD, we are proud to offer Botox to our patients to take years off their faces and ease their discomfort.
Cosmetic Applications of Botox
Cosmetic injectables can be used to treat smile lines, crow’s feet, and other wrinkles. Injections are administered to temporarily relax your muscles and create a younger, smoother look.
Therapeutic Applications of Botox
The ability that the purified protein has to relax a patient’s muscles means that they can be used to help patients who are struggling with dental issues, including:
Bruxism: the grinding or clenching of teeth
Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD): TMD can cause extreme facial and jaw pain
Orthodontic therapy: restraining muscle movement to keep teeth from shifting back into an undesirable position
What to expect with Botox Treatments
Reviewing your goals with your doctor is best for setting real expectations on how botox will affect you. The procedure itself is quite simple, as most patients feel the injection like a bug bite or mild pinch.
